The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
